This thesis project combines my interest in Adaptive Reuse, Local Art & Design Communities, Exhibition Design, & Transformative Community Development. The site I choose was a former power plant for Lucky Strike, an iconic symbol of Richmond, Virginia's tobacco history. I specifically choose a building that at the time had been neglected & in disrepair in a part of Richmond that was not the thriving community that is today. It's proximity to the James River and its connection to Virginia's agrarian & maritime history also provided a meaningful connection to my family's legacy of farming and boat building.
THE MISSION is to design a community center that supports the development of a sustainable community for Tobacco Row in Richmond, Virginia. POWERHOUSE is a source of power, strength, and vitality that will provide a supportive and engaging environment fueling the local community with positive exchanges and ideas.
